Who is Minerva?

A significant figure in Roman mythology, Minerva is the goddess of wisdom and creativity. Her name derives from the word for “mind.” Patron of thinking, calculating, and invention, she merges fact with creative endeavors. She is believed to be the inventor of both music and musical instruments. As a goddess Minerva enjoys a certain status; however, her link to the arts, craft, and social justice, connects her to ordinary people. In Greco-Roman mythology, Minerva is one of the mothers of the Muses, those goddesses who are the inspirations for many creative pursuits, from song, and dance, to poetry. Minerva is closely identified with Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, though Minerva is less associated with the violence of war; rather, she is more of a strategic warrior.

Often depicted with an Owl—her sacred animal—another of Minerva’s symbols is the olive tree. While those going into battle invoke her to ensure victory, Minerva possesses a tender heart for the defeated, and “extends an olive branch” as a sign of her sympathy.
